Too often the term 'family history' conjures up feelings of boredom and old, browning photographs. Yes family history can be boring. Scrolling through record after record trying to find a missing ancestor can make you want to scream and tear your hair out in frustration. Dates and facts are important in family history, but for me, the part that makes it come alive are the stories. Hearing stories and accounts of ancestors make the facts on a page turn into people.
I get asked where to start with family history and my advice is to begin with interviews. Contact your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins etc. Ask them questions, find out about their lives, their likes, their interests, the challenges they face. Ask everyone in the family - each family member will remember different things about events according to their age and interests.
Family history is interviewing family members, it's documenting your life today, it's about making connections with others. I hope that Abzi's Story can help you to make family history a part of your every day.
